Challenge: Unplanned Failure and Complex Interfaces
When a large slip ring induction motor failed at a cement plant in Belgium, fast and highly precise action was required. The installed unit was a complex custom design featuring two shaft ends and pedestal bearings. To make matters worse, the original base frame was permanently cast into the concrete foundation. The replacement motor therefore had to fit the existing plant configuration mechanically, thermally and electrically without losing valuable time or increasing commissioning risks.
Solution: Large Motor Modifications from Stock
MENZEL met this challenge by skilfully combining immediate stock availability with deep in-house engineering expertise. Rather than building a completely new unit with a lead time of several months, the team selected a suitable high-voltage slip ring motor directly from its own inventory. In a targeted rebuild program, MENZEL's engineers reworked the rotor-side design to provide two shaft ends once again. The mounting arrangement was also converted to raised feet, guaranteeing a perfectly stable alignment in the mill drive train despite the changed motor geometry. The cooling system was precisely modified as well. After conversion to IC 616 cooling including all adaptations for the fresh-air duct connection, the motor integrated seamlessly into the plant's existing ventilation and thermal management concept.
Through detailed upfront discussions on changes to overall dimensions and cable routing, our customer was able to plan and carry out the necessary civil and electrical works in parallel with the motor rebuild. This drastically reduced schedule risk and enabled a controlled, rapid recommissioning.
