Challenge: Technical complexity within the shortest of time
Our customer encountered an unexpected failure of a 10 MW compressor motor within an oil refinery located in Oman, creating a critical bottleneck to their production process. The operating environment posed additional challenges, with high ambient temperatures and strict hazardous area requirements necessitating full ATEX compliance. The replacement motor also required several mechanical adaptations, including a customized shaft diameter and dedicated flange interfaces for a purge system, further increasing the engineering complexity. Given the urgency, the customer needed an exceptionally short delivery timeframe to minimize financial losses, while still requiring complete documentation and certification in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
Solution: Certified customized engineering effort
MENZEL responded with a highly focused engineering effort, rapidly designing a custom 10,000 kW three-phase squirrel cage motor tailored to the compressor’s exact needs. The motor shaft was precisely adapted to the existing coupling diameter and a special keyway was fabricated. Flush connections were integrated into the terminal boxes and motor housing to connect the customer's pre-flush system. Considering the severe environmental conditions, the motor incorporated a robust cooling design (IC 81W) and an IP55 protection rating to ensure reliable operation in the hot refinery atmosphere. To meet strict safety requirements in potentially explosive atmospheres, the motor was built and certified under the ATEX - Directive 2014/34/EU, affording full compliance for potentially explosive environments. Remarkably, MENZEL completed all mechanical adaptations, manufacturing, testing, and certification within only 12 calendar days, achieved through extraordinary dedication by the project team, enabling urgent air freight delivery and quick installation. The comprehensive and meticulous project documentation provided full transparency to the customer.
