Six 6000 V motors to drive Coal Mine Conveyor belts

MENZEL supplied a total of six 6000 volt slip ring motors for the largest electricity supplier in Romania.

The electric motors, each weighing 5.6 tons, drive conveyor belts in an open pit coal mine. The main raw material for power generation there is lignite, which is extracted in the company's own open pit mines.

Approximately 38.4% of Romania's net electricity generated in 2022 was from fossil fuel combustion. Despite the energy turnaround that has been initiated, over 18% of electricity is currently generated from lignite. However, Romania's coal consumption has steadily declined since 1990, and Romania aims to phase out coal by 2032 at the latest.

Slip ring motors as conveyor belt motors - high starting torques and low starting currents

Conveyor belt systems in open pit mines are often many kilometers long. They are needed to transport both coal and overburden in huge quantities. Slip ring motors are used to drive conveyor belts, and also in crane applications, because they have a high starting torque. This means that they can start up with great force. This allows loads with a high moment of inertia to be driven.
 
At the same time, asynchronous motors with slip ring rotors can start up smoothly by adjusting the starter, and all this with a low inrush current. Slip ring motors as conveyor belt motors also have high efficiency and are relatively easy to install.

The IC 611 series' closed cooling system, with an air-to-air heat exchanger completely separated from the motor housing, ensures optimum dust protection and thermal characteristics. The reliable and durable bearing design as well as the overall very robust motor construction ensure a long service life.

MENZEL Slip-Ring Motors for Heavy Duty Applications

Slip ring motors are still the first choice when it comes to heavy duty applications starting at approx. 500 kW. They withstand particularly harsh operating conditions and are thus ideal for driving conveyor belts, mills, crushers, fans or similar in the mining and cement industries.

We manufacture and supply asynchronous motors with slip ring rotors in a power range from 250 kW to 8000 kW at frequencies of 50 or 60 Hz. The motors are designed for voltages up to 13 800 V, 13.8 kV and are available in all common cooling and protection types.
