Maximum maneuverability with azimuth thrusters
An azimuth thruster is a steerable propulsion unit used for both propulsion and steering. Unlike a fixed propeller shaft, an azimuth thruster can rotate 360°, enabling exceptional maneuverability. This propulsion type is commonly used on tugs, ferries, and offshore vessels and places stringent demands on the drive motor.
Optimal Performance enabled by flexible motor speeds
The medium-voltage motor supplied for the azimuth thruster is a pole-changing, two-speed marine motor featuring two separate windings for different operating speeds—ensuring maximum adaptability:
- 8-pole winding: 2,000 kW at 895 rpm
- 10-pole winding: 800 kW at 713 rpm
To dynamically adjust the thrust output, the drive must be capable of delivering multiple speeds.
Thanks to its high starting torque, the motor reliably accelerates the propeller even under load. Its stable torque characteristics compensate sudden load variations caused by waves or currents.
