Special technical challenges on the crane ship and our solution
In addition to the compact design of the ballast pump motor, a key aspect was a threaded version of the terminal box adapters. These could not be welded to the housing, as this would have made installation through the existing maintenance opening impossible. Our engineers developed an innovative, threaded adapter solution that optimizes both ease of installation and maintenance access.
In addition, four lifting eyes were integrated on the drive side to enable vertical insertion of the motor through the roof of the ship's installation. RINA guidelines approval certifies the motor's suitability for maritime use and guarantees reliable performance under demanding conditions on the crane ship.

MENZEL: Manufacturer of customized Marine and Ship Motors
MENZEL is a global manufacturer of large electric motors. We offer customized motor solutions that are precisely tailored to the respective application. Our highly skilled team can professionally adapt the size, power, and cooling of the motors. We have been doing this for almost100 years.
In the marine industry and on ships, MENZEL electric motors are used for a wide variety of applications: as main and auxiliary drives (propulsion motors), to drive bow thrusters or side thrusters, for generators, crane systems, compressors, or pumps.
Use and requirements for the electric drive of a ballast pump on a crane ship
A ballast pump on a crane shipis used to regulate the ballast water system. The ballast water is used to control the stability and trim of the ship - especially during heavy lifting operations with the crane. By selectively filling or emptying the ballast tanks with the help of the pumps, the ship can be balanced and kept stable to enable safe working conditions.
What criteria must the electric drive of a ballast pump on a crane ship meet? It must:
- be designed for continuous operation (24/7)
- have a sufficiently high rated power to operate the pump reliably even under high loads
- meet the requirements of RINA, DNV, or other classification societies
- have protection classes such as IP55 or higher to be protected against water and moisture
- withstand extreme temperatures, vibrations, and corrosion
About the third most powerful floating crane and one of the largest working vessels in the world
The crane vessel supplied by MENZEL is designed for laying pipelines in deep water and for heavy lifting work in offshore construction and energy projects. It is self-propelled and has a semi-submersible body.
The vessel has an advanced ballast system with four 6,000 m³/h ballast pumps, 40 ballast tanks, and 14 fast ballast tanks, which ensure efficient stability adjustment during operation.

Marine certification and RINA approval: safety and quality for marine motors
Marine certification such as RINA plays a key role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of marine motors in international maritime transport. It ensures that electric motors meet the technical and safety requirements of a recognized classification society.
RINA approval refers to the certification and classification of ships and their components by theRegistro Italiano Navale (RINA). RINA is an internationally recognized classification society based in Genoa, Italy. RINA approval certifies that our motors comply with international standards, are safely designed, and can be operated without risk.
Advantages of RINA-certified marine motors
Safety: Prevents accidents through tested design and operational safety.
Environmental protection: Minimizes emissions and ecological risks.
Operational efficiency and reliability: Optimizes motor performance and service life.
By adhering to strict RINA testing criteria, our buyers and operators of large ships benefit from the highest level of safety, reliability, and efficiency of our electric engines.
