3000 HP Slip Ring Motor for Mining Ball Mill in the Andes

At its Paragsha plant, located at an altitude of 4,500 meters in the Peruvian Andes, Minería Volcan required an upgrade for one of its ball mill drives. The existing motor with a rated output of 2,500 HP no longer met the performance requirements. To improve grinding capacity, the mining company specified a more powerful solution while retaining the same frame size to fit the existing installation.

The project involved the design and delivery of a three-phase slip ring motor rated at 3,000 HP, engineered by MENZEL to withstand the high-altitude operating environment. Since the motor was intended as a stand-by unit, no express delivery schedule was necessary.

Technical Requirements of the Minería

The customer’s key requirements were:

  • Increase rated output from 2,500 HP to 3,000 HP
  • Maintain the same frame size for drop-in compatibility
  • Ensure reliable performance at high altitude (4,500 m a.s.l.)
  • Outdoor installation under roof, with protection against dust and humidity

MENZEL’s Custom Mining Motor Solution

MENZEL supplied a slip ring motor type MEBSSL560-04 tailored to the site-specific conditions. The motor was engineered in compliance with IEC / EN 60034-1 standards and underwent final testing at MENZEL’s in-house load test field in Hennigsdorf, Germany, before shipment.

About Minería Volcan

Minería Volcan S.A.A. is one of Peru’s largest mining companies and a leading producer of silver, zinc, lead, and copper. With operations concentrated in the central highlands of the Andes, the company runs several underground and open-pit mines as well as processing plants. The Paragsha plant in Pasco is one of its key sites, located at extreme altitude and known for its demanding operating conditions.

Customer Witness Test at MENZEL’s Berlin Test Field

To guarantee performance and transparency, Minería Volcan representatives traveled to Berlin to attend the final load test of the 3,000 HP mining motor. At MENZEL’s state-of-the-art motor test field in Hennigsdorf, the motor was subjected to a wide range of full-load and no-load conditions, ensuring compliance with all specifications.

The test field, one of the most modern in Europe, allows comprehensive testing of motors up to 15 MW with voltages up to 13.8 kV, giving customers confidence in operational reliability before installation on site.

Increased Output, Same Frame – Benefits for Mining Operations

By upgrading to 3,000 HP within the same frame size, Minería Volcan achieved:

  • Higher mill throughput with the 3,000 HP ball mill motor
  • Seamless integration with existing base frame and couplings
  • Reliable operation under harsh mining site conditions
  • Proven performance validated through full-load testing

Conclusion: Reliable 3000 HP Mining Motor for Ball Mill Applications

This project underlines MENZEL’s capability to deliver customized high-output mining motors that combine mechanical interchangeability with enhanced performance. For Minería Volcan, the new slip ring motor ensures long-term operational reliability and supports increased productivity at one of the world’s highest mining plants.
