Synchronous generator for biomass power plant in Scotland

After the failure of a synchronous generator in a biomass power plant in Scotland, the customer was urgently looking for a quick replacement and found it at MENZEL. We are one of the very few suppliers who also keep this very rarely requested synchronous generators in stock.

Menzel Elektromotoren who maintains a very extensive inventory and is specialized on customized adaptations on short notice and who was therefore well prepared to answer this urgent request. Purchasing the replacement generator, which was delivered in only two weeks, was significantly more cost-effective than a lengthy repair, as the IPP may incur revenue losses when the power supply is interrupted.

MENZEL offers large three-phase asynchronous generators and synchronous generators for different industrial applications. Over the course of our company’s long history, we have been able to supply motors and generators to countless industrial plants – be it in Cuba, the Middle East, or Central Europe.

Synchronous generator with customer-specific adaptations

The synchronous generator, which is driven by a steam turbine, required various customer-specific adaptations. The machining of the flange shaft by shortening, turning, shrinking and welding with the appropriate flange was particularly complex.

The wave then passed an ultrasound scan. Furthermore, we changed the cooling method of the generator from IC 01 open-circuit ventilated to IC air-water heat exchanger. We manufactured an adapter frame and mounted a suitable cooler, which we had also in stock at our motor manufacturing plant in Berlin.

Sustainable energy generation from agricultural waste products

Westfield Power Station, which was commissioned in 2000, is the only biomass power plant in Scotland fueled by poultry litter. It is a key partner to the region's agricultural industry both for disposing of a high-volume waste product and as a supplier of power and fertilizer – the nutrient-rich ash produced is a precious natural alternative to artificial fertilizers. The 9.8 MW biomass steam power plant also stands out technologically as it is one of a limited few in the world utilizing fluidized bed technology. The CO2 savings compared to gas-fired power plants are considerable.
